Friends of the Vox is passionate about the power of choral music to unite people from all walks of life. We strive to make a tangible difference in our local community and to foster connections on a global scale. Through our local initiatives, global connections, and the remarkable performances of our choirs, we aspire to make a difference in the lives of individuals and communities. We firmly believe in the transformative power of choral music, and hope that you will join us to support our vision. Together we can nurture a passionate and thriving musical community.

Our Vision

VIAT Choir & St Mary’s Church Scholars

As part of the outreach work of Friends of the Vox, our Artistic Advisor James Meaders dedicates his time once a week during the school year to the VIAT Choir; teaching them about choral singing and conducting, as well as introducing them to music by contemporary composers. James also works with the Choral Scholars at St Mary’s Church in West Malling (Kent), providing scholars with 12 vocal lessons across the year, and also delivering conducting workshops.

Friends of the Vox is committed to supporting James, the VIAT Choir, and St Mary’s Scholars by facilitating further opportunities for performances, concerts and workshops.

Supporting
Professional Musicians

We are committed to supporting professional musicians and composers. Through organising concerts, commissions, and collaborations, we provide a platform for musicians to showcase their talents and contribute to the vibrant musical scene.

However, we also recognise the unique challenges that professional musicians face in their day-to-day lives. Often, their demanding schedules leave little time for rest and self-care. That is why we are dedicated to creating retreat experiences that enable musicians to unplug and reset. We understand that a balanced and healthy lifestyle is crucial for musicians to be at their best both professionally and personally.

Supporting Our Community & Empowering the Next Generation of Musicians

One of our primary objectives is to support our local community and schools that lack the access and necessary resources to music education. We firmly believe that every individual, regardless of their background, should have the opportunity to experience the transformative properties of music.

To achieve this vision, Friends of the Vox will form partnerships with schools and community organisations, to support in the provision of music education programmes, workshops, and resources to empower the next generation of musicians and foster their artistic growth.

Vox Populi & Vox Anima Chamber Choir

Central to the work of Friends of the Vox are our two core choirs: Vox Populi and Vox Anima Chamber Choir.

These ensembles embody the spirit of Friends of the Vox, and serve as ambassadors for the charity; supporting on workshops, collaborative concerts, commissioning composers, and inspiring others to join them in their musical ambitions.

International Exchange
& Collaboration

We are dedicated to fostering and nurturing connections which transcend the boundaries of geography and culture through the power of choral music.

One way we do this is through facilitating opportunities for collaborative concerts and exchanges, supporting with travel and concert expenses, and making bursaries available to younger students.

We are also particularly passionate about working in South Africa, having links with The International Partnership for Choral Music Education, a service learning-based symposium in Johannesburg that is dedicated to promoting the development of the choral arts of South Africa. Friends of the Vox is dedicated to developing this relationship, facilitating a variety of music education opportunities, particularly among the black South African population.
